The Denver Zoo is beautifully laid out, with enclosures adapted to different species (polar bears' den, monkeys' island, "stroke the animals" zoo). The zoo is committed to a long term plan to replace and modernize exhibits. The zoo was begun in the late 1800s grew in the decades that followed. However, by the 1990s the zoo was in need of an update and work has been ongoing. Some of the newer exhibits at the Denver Zoo include the Primate Panorama, Tropical Discovery, and Gates Wildlife Conservation Education Center. The most recent development is the Toyota Elephant Passage, a 10-acre site that was a long time in development.
Today the zoo is home to some 3.500 animals and more than 650 species. It is one of Denver's most popular attractions.
