Holbaek Attractions
The old town of Holbæk lies on Holbæk Fjord, an arm of the large Ise Fjord, 30 km/19 mi northwest of Roskilde. The interesting local museum (opening hours given), exhibiting 17th C. furniture and tools, is at Klosterstræde 16; near the museum a half-timbered house of 1660 has been re-erected. Sailing and motorboats can be hired at the yacht station.
4km/2.5mi south of Holbæk the visitor will find Tveje-Merløse Church;, dating from ca. 1120 and restored in 1892-4. It is one of the oldest churches in the country. It was originally built by members of the Hvide family, to which Bishop Absalon also belonged. Of special interest are the pulpit of 1571 and the wall-paintings of ca. 1175. In the churchyard stands a modern 20th C. sculpture, "Pottemageren" (Jug Maker), by Jais Nielsen.
