The town of Herning lies on Jutland Heath between Ringkøbing and Silkeborg, and is the center of the Danish textile industry. At the end of the 17th C. there were just a few farms here, but in the 19th C. Herning developed quickly to become an important center of communications and a number of industrial firms settled here. Large numbers of fairs and exhibitions are held in the town.
The Herningsholm Mansion, a major historical building in central Jutland, merits a visit. After careful restoration it was equipped as a museum in 1980 to commemorate the author Steen Steensen Blicher (1782-1848), the writer of popular novels on life in the region and known affectionately as the "Poet of the Heathland". The exhibits include illustrations by Danish artists for inclusion in his books, first editions and original manuscripts.
At Museumsgade 28 in Herning lies Denmark's Photographic Museum. Here visitors can see a panoramic photograph of Copenhagen measuring 100 by 1,170cm/3ft 4in by 39ft 6in, as well as a collection of holographs.
