Gammel Lejre - Viking Ship Burial Attractions

The old village of Gammel Lejre, near Lejre in the area of Roskilde, has in its small Kongsgården Museum (royal estate) the remains of a Viking ship burial and, near Øm, a "corridor grave" of the Late Stone Age (ca. 3000 B.C.), one of the best-preserved burial mounds in Denmark. This consists of 15 upright stones and four covering stones. The stone chamber measures 7m/23ft long and 1.8m/6ft wide. A visit is possible - visitors are recommended to carry a flashlight. In the course of archaeological digs stone objects have been found, including chisels, daggers and arrowheads, as well as pottery and human bones.
