Fredensborg - Castle Attractions Slot
15 km/9mi along the A6 to the southwest of Helsingør is the town of Fredensborg on the Erumso, with Fredensborg Castle (Fredensborg Slot). Built in 1719-22 in the Italian Baroque style, it is the spring and autumn residence of the Royal Family. King Frederik IV named the castle "Fredensborg" as a memorial to the peace which ended the Second Nordic War (1700-20). The castle in its present form, with its Classical facade, is the work of the architect Caspar Frederik Harsdoff. When the Queen is in residence the ceremony of the Changing of the Guard takes place every day at noon.
Fredensborg Castle Park
The park, extending northwest to Lake Esrum near Helsingør, was laid out by King Frederik IV. There are 69 statues of workers, farmers and fishermen and these, together with its fine avenues of birches, make this one of the most impressive parks in Denmark; it is open all the year round.
