Nordby Description
The chief place on the island of Fanø is the fishing village of Nordby on the east coast, with its thatched fishermen's cottages. In the Fanø Museum can be seen a typical Fano house, with replicas of Danish trading ships, ceramics and curiosities brought home by local sailors from their trips abroad. Before Esbjerg became the major port on the southwest coast of Jutland Fano was an important marine trading center with a large merchant fleet. This history is documented in the Skipperhus on Hovedgade, which also houses a large costume collection. There are many models of ships hanging from the ceiling of the 18th C. church, which has a hipped roof with glass tiles. There are numerous camping sites near the town of Rindby.
