Newark was originally two crossroads of two Lenni Lenape Indian trails that spanned from Chesapeake Bay to the Delaware River; the intersection became a village with brickyards, tanneries and mills.
Cooch's Bridge is where Delaware's only Revolutionary War battle took place on September 3, 1777. The battle was to slow the British advance toward the Brandywine and Philadelphia. Tradition says that the Stars and Stripes were first flown during the action here.
Hales-Byrnes House is mid-18th C architecture with a fieldstone springhouse. George Washington and his staff met here during the American Revolution's Brandywine campaign.
Tips: Open the 1st Wednesday of each month 12-3pm and other times by appointment.
Iron Hill Museum is housed in a former one room schoolhouse built by the du Pont family in 1923. The museum has collections that include rocks, minerals, floral and faunal specimens, archeological and historical displays, mounted birds and iron exhibits.
