Danube - Sailing Tour

Between Passau and Vienna the Danube, now harnessed to supply hydroelectric power by a number of dams, flows through varied scenery, passing some 40 castles, palaces and ruins, a dozen celebrated Baroque buildings and numerous other historic sites. With all this, and three capital cities on the route, a trip along the Danube valley is one of the most memorable journeys in Europe. The road and railroad accompany the river for considerable stretches, frequently taking short cuts when the hills along the banks compel it to take a wide turn but always - particularly at the most beautiful parts of the valley - returning to run close to it again. There are passenger services between Passau and Vienna as well as between Vienna and Budapest and through to the Black Sea. There are also combined trips (boat and rail, boat and coach) and cruises. Information can be obtained from the offices of the Erste-Donau- Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft.
