Polis - Marion Ancient Site
The Marion Ancient Site is near the town of Polis. It was founded in the seventh century B.C. by the Athenians and was an important center for the export of copper. The settlement was destroyed in 312 B.C. by Ptolemy I. A new town was then built and called Arsinoe after the sister of one of the Ptolemies. It was once one of the 10 City Kingdoms of early Cyprus. The area has been extensively excavated revealing a large number of tombs and relics, although the best finds have been put in the Cyprus Museum.
