Geroskipou Attractions
This small village is known for its association with the goddess Aphrodite. It has a beautiful tourist beach, an interesting folk museum and a fine church, Agia Paraskevi.
The Byzantine church dates from the 10th century and is also one of the most unusual on the island, having five domes. The three domes over the nave intersect with two over the aisles to form a cross. Some of the decorations over the altar date from the ninth century. Most of the paintings are of a later period, including a 12th century depiction of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. Most of the frescoes in the nave are from the 15th century.
The folk art museum is in an 18th century Cypriot house, which was occupied in Victorian times by the British vice-consul. The ground floor contains farming and domestic tools ranging from bread cutters to tongs to catch eels. Upstairs are traditional costumes and pottery, while outbuildings include local trades and industries.
Every August the town also hosts a festival "The Revival of Aphrodite Rituals" in celebration of the mythological figure.
