Where to Stay & What to See in Cyprus

Located in the eastern portion of the Mediterranean Sea the island of Cyprus is a unique mix of cultures, with Turkish influences in the north and Greek in the south. The so called Green Line divides the island accordingly. Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean and features mountains, plains, and beaches along with a wealth of historical monuments. The island is a popular tourist destination and as such has seen its share of development over recent decades. Cyprus hotels and resorts are plentiful and range from budget to top end ocean front vacation resorts with something to suit any type of traveler.

Some of the main towns on the island are Paphos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Limassol, an industrial town and important port which is also a major tourist center, Nicosia, the capital city located inland, and Agia Napa, a former fishing village turned tourist destination. These are just a few of the tourist hot spots but visitors will find hotels in all the major towns and villages. Many of the most luxurious hotels are located along beach fronts, such as the five star Le Meridien Limassol Spa and Resort with a fabulous natural looking sprawling pool or the Thessala Boutique Hotel and Spa near Paphos. Some of the best hotels are located outside the major centers offering a more secluded and private experience.

Cyprus is largely regarded as a summer destination but the best time to go may depend on individual interests. Summers are hot and attract hordes of tourists who come here to enjoy the beaches and sea. Prices of hotels in Cyprus go up considerably during July and August and hotels may be booked up during this time. August is the busiest month of the year as locals as well as tourists head for the beaches. However, for those looking to sightsee and explore the historical sites around the island the spring or fall is not as oppressively hot and a better temperature for this type of activity. The weather during this time is moderate enough that visitors can enjoy walking around and still spend some time at the beach if they wish. Winter is the low season when temperatures can be cool to cold, particularly at higher elevations. On the upside, hotel prices will be much less expensive and the towns and historical sites will be less busy.

Many people come to Cyprus to explore the archeological sites and learn about the island's history. There are numerous locations around the island that cover a variety of time periods dating back thousands of years. Many of the archeological and historical sites open to the public are located along the southern coast from Lemba across to Kition. The walled city of Nicosia is also an historical treasure that can best be appreciated by walking through the old town center.

While Nicosia is not located along the ocean it often draws tourists for the historical atmosphere and those who come here to experience the capital city. Nicosia has many hotels including one five star, the Hilton Cyprus with indoor and outdoor swimming pools, spa, and a variety of dining options. Nicosia falls along the Green Line which separates the Greek portion from the Turkish occupied northern portion of the island. As a result Greeks and Turks cannot cross freely from one side of the city to the other.
