Description
Isla de la Juventud is the largest island in the Archipelago de los Canarreos and boasts a relatively large population of almost 90,000 residents. The island got its name, Island of Youth, after Fidel Castro decided to populate the island with young people. Unlike many Cuban islands, Isla de la Juventud does not have any large scale all inclusive luxury hotels and has been inhabited for a relatively long time. As a result the island has a very real Cuban feel and tourism is not the only thing sustaining the economy.

The main town is the lively town of Nueva Gerona where visitors will find all the regular amenities. Scattered around Isla de la Juventud are a number of attractions in the form of beaches, caves, rock paintings, and fishing villages.
