Mali Losinj, on the southeast coast, is the main settlement on Losinj Island. The town dates back to the 6th Century but really flourished during the 18th and 19th Centuries under Venetian rule. Many grand homes of the retired sea captains from this time period can still be seen in and around the town. Mali Losinj is one of the largest
settlements on all of the Croatian Islands and attracts visitors from all over.
There is little of note by way of cultural attractions apart from the early 18th Century Church of the Nativity of the Virgin and what is know as Art Collections (Umjetnicke Zbirke). This gallery contains the private collections of two collectors who donated their inventory to the town. The collections include the works of 20th Century Croatian painters and sculptors and 16th to 18th Century paintings by Venetian, Dutch and French paintings.
There is a wide selection of hotels, restaurants, and other tourist facilities in Mali Losinj. Most of the large hotels and tourist activity focuses around Cikat Bay and the famous stretch of beach along here. The harbor front in Mali Losinj has a long promenade with shops along the side.
