Krapina is best known for the archeological finds that come from this area. In 1899 the remains of what came to be known as Krapina Man (Homo krapinensis) were found here. This showed evidence of settlement in this area from the time of the Neandrathals, approximately 100,000 to 35,000 BC. Krapina ranks as one of the most important archeological
sites in Europe. Bones taken from the site are in the Archeological Museum in Zagreb. A small archeological museum, the Museum of Evolution, at the Krapina archeological site displays weapons and other instruments found at the site.
The town of Krapina itself does not warrant much time for sightseeing. The main attractions are the City Art Gallery, a Franciscan monastery and the Church of St Catherine.
