The town of Cakovec developed around the castle, after the Zrinski family who owned it in the late 1500s, granted tax privileges to anyone willing to settle in the immediate area. The castle is now the towns main attraction in Cakovec, which prides itself on its industry and hard working citizens. The castle consists of the 13th Century tower of Chaktornya, the defensive wall and one storey "Old Castle", and the impressive "New Castle" which is the main four storey palace. The New Castle is a rectangular building with a central courtyard. The Old Castle was once a prison but is now undergoing renovations.
Also of interest in Cakovec is the Medimurje Civic Museum with ethnographic and archeological exhibits, and a tribute to J Slavenski, a Croatian composer.
Cakovec is on the main road leading to Hungary, about 80km / 48mi from Zagreb. It is not a huge tourist destination but can make a nice day trip from the city.
