10 km (6 mi.) north-west of the town of Creston, on Highway 3, is the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area and Interpretation Centre, a nature reserve covering 6.5 sq. km (2.5 sq. mi.), which preserves a part of the typically swampy areas of the Kootenay River delta. It has become a refuge for more than 240 species of birds - such as osprey, blue heron and countless migratory birds including "whistling swans" - as well as for elk, beaver, bears, coyotes and deer. An insight into the flora and fauna of the region is given by means of instructive nature walks, guided treks and canoe-tours, an observation tower with telescopes, and the Creston Valley Wildlife Interpretation Centre.
The Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area is also a nice place for canoeing, hiking, picnicking or bicycling.
