The Boruca Indigenous Reserve is centered around this small village. Life in Boruca is slow and steady, as men often work surrounding farms and the women stay at home to weave. Boruca makes for an interesting trip to the culturally sensitive traveler. Visitors note that village inhabitants are often very interested in them and their belongings.
The Fiesta de los Diablitos ("little devils") occurs annually over three days in early January. The fiesta features a re-enactment of the war between the Spanish conquistadors and the local Natives. In this rendition, the Boruca are triumphant.
About 50 men wearing wooden devil masks and burlap costumes represent the Boruca, while a man in a bull costume represents the Spanish. Over the course of two nights, short performances are given in a variety of locations where the bull is taunted and the "diablitos" dance around him. On the third night the bull is symbolically killed.
