Description
The old fortress dates from the Venetian occupation and was constructed in the 15th century.

Many historians identify the fortress as the Heraion Acropolis, mentioned by Thycidides. The fortress has been cut off from the land proper by an artificial defensive moat, the famous contrafossa, measuring 15 m deep and from 23 to 40 m wide.
