Copenhagen - Christianshavn District

From Børs Gade in central Copenhagen, a bascule bridge, the Knippelsbro, with a span of 29m/95ft, leads into the district of Christianshavn on the island of Amager. The older quarter, transversed by a number of canals, has something of the atmosphere of Amsterdam. Pretty houses front the waterside by which stands Christians Kirke, flanked by two pavilions; in the church note the font of Norwegian marble, a christening shawl with an inscription in German and the crypt with its burial chapel.

Christiana, Denmark
Since it was at Christianshavn originally that the Royal Fleet was to be protected, military establishments were set up there. In 1971 the old barracks on Bådsmandsstraede were vacated. Drop-outs, members of the "alternative society" and hippies moved into the building and proclaimed it the "Free State of Christiana". After protests by the Danish public this establishment was recognised as a "social experiment" between 1973 and 1975. Christiana still exists today and is visited by many tourists.
