Groton (pop. 45,000) is best known for the submarines which are built here by General Dynamics. The company built the first atomic powered submarine, launched in 1954, which is on display in the town.
Fort Griswold State Park is the site of the 1781 massacre by the British, who took the fort and burned the towns of Groton and New London. It covers 17 acres and contains the 1750 Ebenezeer Avery House.

Project Oceanology offers educational, hands on boat excursions, which allow passengers to participate in research projects and learn about the ocean. The "Envirolab" cruises offer 2 1/2 hour expeditions of this nature.

The Submarine Force Museum explores the history of the American Submarine Force through a collections of more than 33,000 artifact. The USS Nautilus is usually located here and open to the public.
