Essex (pop. 6,000), once a prosperous shipbuilding community in the early 1800s, still maintains many of its historic buildings from this time period. The first American warship, "Oliver Cromwell" was built here.
The Connecticut River Museum presents displays related to the history of water vessels on the Connecticut River. Steamboats, shipbuilding, the first submarine, and other related artifacts are featured here, as well as changing exhibits.

This combination train ride and riverboat cruise includes a 12 mile ride on a restored steam train, followed by a 1 1/2 hour cruise on the Connecticut River. The cruise is optional, with all but the last train of the day connecting with the cruise boat.

Pratt House was started in 1700 by John Pratt, Jr. and added to in 1732 as well as 1790 to 1800. The Georgian architecture features period funishings and a herb garden.
