Cómiso - San Francesco

Worthy of mention among Cómiso's churches are the Chiesa di San Francesco dating from the 13th-14th centuries (in the Cappella Naselli of 1517 the tomb of Count Gaspare Naselli by Antonello Gagini), the Chiesa Madre dating from the Baroque period (15th century, renewed after 1693 with a towering, three-storyed facade) and, on a terrace in the upper part of the town, the church of Sant'Annunziata.

This great domed basilica with its massive facade and its late Baroque interior, tending towards classicism, was built in 1772-93 to plans by G. B. Cassione; the dome, with its drummer surrounded by pillars, was not added until 1877-85 - "proof of the long-lasting Baroque tradition in Sicily" (W. Krönig).
