Monte Vista Attractions
Monte Vista is a historic town surrounded by magnificent mountains. The name of the town is Spanish for mountain view. Each year in March, the annual migration of the Sandhill and endangered Whooping cranes brings visitors from all over the world to the Crane Festival.
Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1953 to provide habitat for wildlife, particularly waterfowl. The refuge is affiliated with the Alamosa National Wildlife Refuge in Alamosa County. The water is strictly managed in the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge to ensure that refuge lands continue to provide food, cover and nesting habitat for waterfowl and other water birds. This is a popular stopover for migratory birds such as the sandhill crane.
