La Junta was once located at the junction of the Navajo and Santa Fe Trails. La Junta has several historic attractions including the reconstructed Bent's Old Fort, the Koshare Indian Dancers and Museum, the Otero Museum and, nearby the Boggsville Historic Site.
Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site has a reconstructed 1840's adobe fur trading post. This site was a major stopping point on the Santa Fe Trail for traders, trappers, travelers, and Plains Indian tribes. The original fort was built in 1833 by William Bent and abandoned in 1849. Bent's Old Fort offers guided tours with costumed interpreters and living history demonstrations.

The Koshare Indian Museum in La Junta is built to resemble a Native American kiva with art and artifacts on display. As a performing arts center, there are ceremonial dances on weekend evenings in summer, and between Christmas and the New Year.

Otero Museum features a railroad collection, artifacts from the early years in the lower Arkansas Valley, and historic buildings. Other exhibits include military items, mini post office, and a medical display.
