La Veta is a town of 700 people in Huerfano County. The town began in 1862 when John M. Francisco purchased land and built Fort Francisco.
La Veta - Fort Francisco Museum
Francisco Fort was built in 1862 as an adobe structure with walls one foot thick, built around an open plaza, to serve as protection from Indian threat. The Francisco Fort Museum houses artifacts from the 1700's through 1945 highlighting indigenous peoples, Spanish explorers, soldiers, and Hispanic settlers.
