Gunnison is a western style town that was founded in 1887 as a single ranch. Skiing is the most popular winter activity while fishing, hunting, hiking, camping and exploring are popular during summer months.
The displays at the Pioneer Museum in Gunnison include 8 buildings, artifacts and memorabilia from the settlement of the area, including Ute Indian crafts and an old narrow gauge train. The telephone exhibit features a telephone booth originally used in an Alliance, Nebraska railroad depot.
The Waunita Hot Springs Ranch in Gunnison is located in the Colorado Rockies with a relaxing atmosphere, home-cooked meals, a swimming pool and spa as well as year-round activities. There is opportunity for horseback riding, fishing, camping and whitewater rafting.
Western State College in Gunnison is hard to miss, thanks to the huge "W" on the mountain next to the campus - the largest collegiate letter in the world. Western is a smaller, public, 4-year liberal arts school located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains.
Outside of the classroom, Western students can often be found hiking, mountain biking, boating, fishing or skiing. Areas surrounding campus include Blue Mesa Reservoir, Crested Butte Mountain Resort, Monarch Ski Mountain and Hartman's Rocks Recreational Center.
