Gunnison National Forest

The Gunnison National Forest, originally called the Cochetopa Forest Reserve, was named for Captain John Gunnison, who searched in 1853 for a feasible route across the Continental Divide for a railroad. The forest currently has over 1 million acres of public land, including 22 peaks that reach higher than 13,000 feet.
