Carbondale, Colorado
Situated at the confluence of the Crystal and Roaring Fork Rivers, Carbondale stands at the foot of towering Mount Sopris and is the gateway to Redstone and Marble along the West Elk Loop Scenic Byway on Colorado Highway 133. Carbondale has a unique flavor, offering an historic downtown, hotels, cabins, bed and breakfasts, art galleries, boutiques, antique shops and restaurants to suit every taste. Opportunities for hiking, biking, cross country skiing, backpacking and off-road driving abound in the back country around Carbondale. There are tennis courts, riding stables and two championship golf courses. The area is known for its hunting and fishing, kayaking and whitewater rafting.
Harvey Gap State Park
Harvey Gap State Park is noted for its fishing all year round. Ice fishing in winter or fishing from boats in summer can bring opportunity for catfish, largemouth and smallmouth bass, perch, crappie, rainbow trout and northern pike. A variety of wildlife can be seen by the lakeshore and the beach is perfect for swimming.
Glenwood Springs, Colorado
Glenwood Springs is the seat of Garfield County in northwest Colorado. The town is known for its hot mineral springs, and also as the burial site of gunslinger Doc Holliday. It was originally known as Defiance when it was founded in 1883.
Hot Springs Lodge and Pool
The Ute Indians considered the Yampah Hot Springs a sacred healing spot. They were discovered in 1860 and 20 years later investors created the world's largest outdoor hot springs pool in Glenwood Springs. Today, Hot Springs Lodge and Pool allows visitors to enjoy the therapy pool with a temperature of 90 degrees Fahrenheit, diving pool, waterslides and kiddy pool.
Glenwood Springs Center for the Arts
The Glenwood Springs Center for the Arts has a gallery with new shows featured every month. The center hosts a variety of performances and exhibits including musical performances, student recitals, arts and crafts festivals, a culinary arts festival, kids activities, and plays.
Frontier Historical Museum
The Frontier Historical Museum in Glenwood Springs has exhibits highlighting the history of the town including a Victorian living room, mineral display, and Native American artifacts. There is an archival collection and photographic collection.
Glenwood Caverns & Historic Fairy Caves
Opened in 1886, the caves were originally called Fairy Caves. The caves closed from 1917 to 1998, during this time several rooms and passageways have been discovered including two of the largest rooms in Colorado.
Yampah Spa Vapor Caves
The Yampah Spa Vapor Caves are natural underground hot mineral water steam baths. The hot mineral waters flow through the cave floors to create natural geothermal steam baths. The caves are three adjoining underground rock chambers.
Redstone, Colorado
Redstone is a town in Garfield County founded by John Cleveland Osgood, cousin of former President Grover Cleveland. Redstone is an alpine village and National Historic District located on the edge of the Maroon Bells Wilderness Area.
Redstone Castle
Redstone Castle, also known as Cleveholm, was built by John Cleveland Osgoode, cousin to President Grover Cleveland. Redstone Castle was used for entertaining powerful men of Osgoode's day, such as John D. Rockefeller, J. P. Morgan, and Teddy Roosevelt. The interior features gold-leaf ceilings, maroon velvet walls, silk brocade upholstery, marble and mahogany fireplaces.
Redstone Inn
The Redstone Inn is a National Historic Landmark which opened in 1902 as a housing facility for coal miners. It was converted into a hotel in 1925, and restored in 1989. The Redstone features a display of Gustav Stickley furniture and a tower clock that has been operating for almost a century.
Rifle, Colorado
Rifle is a small town that offers a downtown with antique shops and historic museums. Nearby Rifle Gap State Park and Rifle Falls State Park are ideal for outdoor recreational opportunities.
