Elbert County
Located southeast of Denver, Elbert County is one of 19 counties in the East Colorado travel region. Though it once stretched all the way to the Kansas border, Elbert County now consists of 1,854 square miles at the eastern base of the Rocky Mountains. Elevations range from 5,000 to 7,350 feet.

Kiowa was founded in 1859 as a stagecoach station, and designated as the county seat in 1874. Located on Highway 86 in Elbert County, the town is named for the Kiowa Indians, and was originally known as Wendling.

Kiowa - Elbert County Museum
The Elbert County Museum is housed in the old Kiowa High School on State Route 86. The museum opened in 1993 and features changing exhibits.
