Black Canyon of The Gunnison National Monument

130mi/210km southeast of Grand Junction is the spectacular Black Canyon of the Gunnison, a narrow gorge, over 2,600ft/800m deep in places, cut through dark-colored rocks of the Palaeozoic era.
Wildlife in the area include black bears, coyotes and the occasional bobcat or cougar.

Balanced Rock

Balanced Rock is an overlook of the Black Canyon on the North Rim Drive.

Chasm View

Chasm View is an overlook of the Black Canyon on the South Rim Drive.

Deadhorse Trail

Deadhorse Trail is a relatively easy 2.5-mile one-way hike along the north rim of Black Canyon. It is the only area open to horses or pack animals for recreational day riding.

North Rim Drive

The North Rim of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Monument is accessible by Highway 92 south of Crawford. The unpaved North Rim Road has six overlooks and is quite often closed during the winter because snow.

North Rim Ranger Station

The North Rim Ranger Station at Black Canyon is open sporadically through the summer, and closed during the winter. The park rangers will run tours and interpretive programs by special arrangement.

North Vista Trail

The 1.5-mile North Vista Trail at Black Canyon Of The Gunnison National Monument begins at the North Rim Ranger Station and ends at Exclamation Point, passing several overlooks along the way.

Oak Flat Trail

The Oak Flat Trail is a two mile round trip that begins near the South Rim Visitor Center in Black Canyon. The moderately strenuous route provides stunning views of the canyon.

South Rim Drive

The South Rim of the Black Canyon is seven miles long with twelve overlooks. Located in Gunnison National Monument, the drive is accessed by U.S. 50, east of Montrose.

South Rim Visitor Center

The South Rim Visitor Center at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Monument has exhibits on the history and geology of the canyon.

Sunset View

Sunset View is an overlook of the Black Canyon on the South Rim Drive.

Tomichi Point is an overlook of the Black Canyon on the South Rim Drive.

Warner Point Trail

The moderately strenuous Warner Point Trail in Black Canyon Of The Gunnison National Monument is a 1.5-mile round trip that begins at the High Point Overlook.
