Clermont-Ferrand - Notre-Dame-du-Port

In Clermont-Ferrand, the church of Notre-Dame-du-Port (11th-12th C) is a typical example of the Auvergnat Romanesque style. Particularly impressive is the view of the choir with its ambulatory and ring of chapels and the tower over the crossing. The doorway is richly decorated (Isaac, John the Baptist, the childhood of Christ).

Notable features of the interior are the capitals, carved with human and animal figures. In the crypt under the choir is a 17th C Black Virgin, a copy of a Byzantine original which drew many pilgrims in the 13th C.
