Route: Chur (Grisson)-Albula-St Moritz (Engadin)-Bernina-Poschiavo-Tirano (Italy) or in the reverse direction.

Length: 145km/90mi; duration four hours.

Highlights: The Bernina Express travels on Europe's highest mountain railroad line in the Alps. It begins with one of the most beautiful stretches (Chur-St Moritz) on the famous Glacier Express and with a gradient of 7% is one of the steepest railroads in the world operated without rack and pinion.

All the zones of vegetation between the glaciers of Piz Bernina (4,049 m/13,289ft) and the palms of Tirano (429 m/2,695ft) in Italy are passed through on this journey.

Special features: On fine summer days in July and August it is possible to travel on certain trains in an open panorama carriage ("Carozza panoramica"). Trains with old-time dining cars operate between Chur and St Moritz.

The Bernina Express can be combined with the celebrated Glacier Express, (St Moritz- Zermatt), the Engadin Express, (St Moritz-Scuol-Landeck), or the Palm Express (St Moritz-Ascona).
