Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge takes in shoreline, marshes, wetlands, and forest. The area serves as habitat for a variety of shorebirds, waterfowl, and other wildlife. The Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is noted for being a World Biosphere Reserve.
Many visitors come to see the Chincoteague Ponies, of which there are about 150, divided into two groups by fences.
