Jingdezhen Attractions

Jingdezhen is situated in the northeast of the province of Jiangxi, about 150km/93mi northeast of the provincial capital, Nanchang. Jingdezhen can be reached from there by rail and air, and regular flights also connect the town with many other Chinese cities.

Before the 11th C the small village of Xinping on the site of the present town was already known for the high quality of its porcelain production. Emperor Jingde (1004-07) declared the village to be the center of production for imperial porcelain and ordered all pieces produced thereafter to bear the words ''Manufactured in the Jingde period''. In the course of time the town's original name was replaced by that of the emperor. Under the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) Jingdezhen was one of the four centers of porcelain manufacture and had a total of 100 small factories and workshops. This porcelain is famed for being white as jade, clear as a mirror, thin as paper and having an unsullied reputation.

Today the city can claim pride of place in the Chinese art of porcelain-making. One-fifth of the population is in one way or another involved in this highly profitable industry. Kaolin, the raw material from which porcelain is made, comes from the mountain of Gaolin, hence its name.
Jinggangshan - Kilns
On the edge of the city it is possible to visit the remains of old kilns (Guyao Zhi), the most famous being those at Baihuwan (9km/5.5mi east of the city center), Liujiawan (22km/14mi from the center), Huangnitou (7.5km/4.5mi east of the center) and Hutian.

On display are large numbers of porcelain objects, both fired and unfired, dating from the 10th-17th C.
Jinggangshan - Porcelain Factory
The museum in Fengling Lu contains exquisite items on display which illustrate the history and development of porcelain manufacture. Next to it is a porcelain factory which has been restored to its old style.
