Juxtlahuaca Caves Description
Leaving Chilpancingo via the MEX 95, drive south for 9km/5.6mi to Petaquillas where a side road on the left leads to Colotlipa (a further 38km/24mi). The Juxtlahuaca Caves are situated another 7km/4.3mi to the north. Although known about since at least the 1930s, the limestone caves were explored for the first time only in 1966 when they were found to contain 3000-year old wall paintings, skeletal remains and pottery. The paintings, at distances of 1050 m (1150 yd) and 1150 m (1260 yd) from the entrance, again have Olmec themes (depicting Olmec-style chiefs, jaguars, and snakes in shades of black, red, yellow and green).
