Isolated from the rest of the continent by the Andes Mountains, Chile stretches along the Pacific coast from the southern tip of South America to Peru. The country runs 4300km/2666mi from north to south offering an extreme range of climates and sights.
The far south, often known for being a cold and windy place, offers some of the countries best mountain scenery and national parks. The central region is the heart of the country; the industrial and agricultural region is also becoming internationally known. In the north lies the Atacama Desert, one of the driest regions on earth, where volcanoes, beaches and mountains combine to make this a very unique area.
Chile's population is just under 15 million, of which approximately 4.5 million live in the Greater Santiago area. In the north of the country most of the population lives in the coastal cities while the south is less defined due to the fiords and mountains.
