Chihuahua - Government Palace Palacio de Gobierno

The Government Palace (Palacio de Gobierno), a short distance away on the Plaza Hidalgo, was originally a Jesuit college but rebuilt in the 19th c. It was here in 1811 that Pater Hidalgo and his principal collaborators were first held prisoner and then executed. Their heads were afterwards impaled and put on public display in Guanajuato. Also to be seen on the Plaza Hidalgo is the Federal Palace (Palacio Federal) where Hidalgo was detained during his trial.

His remains were interred in the church of San Francisco (1721-41) on the Calle Libertad until removed for reburial in Mexico City in 1823.
Address: Palacio de Gobierno, Avenida Aldama, Chihuahua, Chihuahua , Mexico
