Zaña (Saña)

Zaña is a colonial ghost town, about 50km / 30mi southeast of Chiclayo. Originally established in 1563, Zaña was on course to become the capital of Peru. However, the town became the target of pirate attacks during the 17th Century and residents began to flee, most of whom moved to Lambayeque. Finally, in 1720 a great flood destroyed the town, leaving it in ruins.

Today Zaña consists of portions of colonial architecture jutting up out of the desert floor. Walls and arches, which were formally great churches, remain as a testament to the grandeur that once existed here. There is a small village of Zaña nearby.

Tours to Zaña can be arranged in Chiclayo, or travelers can take a bus to the village of Zaña.
