Tucumé

Located about 35km / 21mi north of Chiclayo is the archeological site of Túcume. Referred to locally as El Valle de las Pirámides (Valley of the Pyramids) the site consists of 26 adobe pyramids. Built by the Sicán civilization about 1000 AD, Túcume was the capital of the Lambayeque civilization. The complex was constructed over a 500 year span.

The Chimú culture moved into this area in the 1300s and expanded Tucumé. This is a very large complex, running about 1.5km / 1mi in each direction. One of the pyramids, Huaca Larga, is said to be the largest adobe brick structure in all of South America.

The site museum displays scale models of Tucumé, along with photographs from the excavation.
