Tucked in north of the Magnificent Mile and south of Lincoln Park is a residential neighborhood with a richness of mansions and architecture which makes for a very interesting walking tour. One usually goes up Astor to Lincoln Park and then down State Parkway with a few turns onto the various cross streets.

Astor Street District
Between E Division Street and E North Avenue is the Astor Street district - six blocks with notable modern buildings by famous architects (Frank Lloyd Wright, David Adler, Bertrand Goldberg, etc.).
Charnley-Persky House
Charnley House was built in 1891-92 and designed by Louis Sullivan with input by his draftsman, Frank Lloyd Wright. The house has a symmetrical floor plan and is considered a pivotal work in modern architecture.
International Museum of Surgical Sciences
The International Museum of Surgical Sciences has one of the world's largest collections of material on the history of medicine and surgery, extending from the simple implements of primitive peoples to the most modern technical apparatus.It is located in an historic status mansion on the city's north side. Some of the artifacts housed within the museum's four floors of exhibits include the knives or "tumis" used by Inca surgeons to perform brain surgery, a working iron lung and photos, tools, and texts used by Civil War doctors to amputate the mutilated limbs of more than 30,000 soldiers. The Museum's collections and exhibits portray the mysteries and milestones that have shaped modern surgical science.There is a library with several medical books from around the world, a gallery with rotating contemporary art exhibits and a medical "Hall of Immortals," with statues of luminaries in the field.
Albert Madlener Residence
Located a short walk from the Charnley-Perksy House, the Albert Madlener Residence was designed by Richard E Schmidt and Hugh MG Garden and built in 1901-02.
