Chemtou - Marble Factory

The most important building within the work camp at Chemtou was the factory (fabrica), with six long workshops, also surrounded by walls, in which a variety of articles designed for export - marble slabs, dishes, pestles and mortars, plates with relief decoration, etc. - were turned out in a highly developed system of mass production based on the division of labor. A series of specialized work-benches have been identified in a kind of ancient assembly line at the end of which the finished articles emerged at the north end of the factory ready for despatch.
