Chebika, on the site of a Roman military post called Ad Speculum, is a small village of stone and mud-brick houses, situated on the slopes of a hill above the palm-grove; the old village, now abandoned, is built into the hillside behind it. The springs which supply the oasis with water are in a picturesque deep gorge 500m/550yds beyond the
village. A road running along the foot of the hill passes the oasis of El Khanga and then winds its way steeply up for 10km/6mi to enter the valley of the Oued Khanga.
