Chatham - Historic Dockyard
|
|
For over 400 years warships were built in Chatham's famous Royal Navy dockyard, including in 1795 Lord Nelson's flagship, "H.M.S. Victory", which today, after extensive restoration, lies at anchor in Portsmouth. The golden age of naval shipbuilding in the 18th century has been recreated at considerable expense and today a large exhibition shows the visitor the skills and trades which were needed to build one of the great sailing vessels of the past, while numerous displays give him a picture of the skills of the craftsmen and laborers who worked in the dockyard.
