Chatham - Fort Amherst

Fort Amherst was initially built in 1756 to provide a defense for the Chatham dockyard and in the face of the French threat between 1802 and 1811 it was considerably extended and strengthened. The only cannon shots to fall here were, however, merely fired during extended maneuvers; Dickens mentions them in "Pickwick Papers". The catacombs and battlement walks of this best preserved of 18th century British forts can be visited, together with a small museum.

On most Sundays throughout the summer there is a re-enactment of military procedures from 1815. The fort contains over 700 meters of underground tunnels.
