Middleton Place Description
The last of the series of plantations on SR 61 is Middleton Place, once the home of Henry Middleton, first President of the Continental Congress. In 1941 he laid out the oldest surviving landscaped garden in North America, which falls away in grassy terraces to the Ashley River.

Middleton Place contains Middleton family furniture, paintings, books and documents dating from the 1740s through the 1880s.
