Changzhou - Temple of Heavenly Peace

(Local Name: Tianning Si) The Temple of Heavenly Peace (Tianning Si) situated in the Old Town and known as the Monastery of Great Rapture (Guangfu Si) until the year 1111, was built in 901-04. Nothing remained of the originally colossal building complex, which consisted of eight temples, 50 larger and numerous smaller buildings. The six halls that exist today were all built in the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). A representation of the 500 Arhats in stone is worth seeing.

Every sixty years the ''Great Buddhist Tonsure'' (Chuanjie Dafahui) is celebrated. The last celebrations were held in 1990.
