Centúripe - Museo Archeologico

The Museo Archeologico is housed in the town hall in Centúripe. It contains Hellenistic and Roman architectural fragments, pottery figures and vases. Most of the finds which have been made in Centúripe are, however, to be found in the Archeological Museum in Syracuse. In order to demonstrate clearly the former importance of the town, the following should be mentioned: an imported black Attic vase with the unusual motif of Heracles playing the lyre (530 B.C.), terracotta sculptures (head of Demeter, fourth century) and reliefs (lion and bull, end of sixth century B.C.), as well as the characteristic pottery of Centúripe itself, e.g. Dionysos with the personification of the vine (Ampelos), and finally the marble heads of Julius Claudius and the Emperor Augustus (beginning of first century A.D.).
