Cartago Surroundings

A few interesting attractions can be found just outside the city of Cartago. The highlight of this region is the Irazú Volcano, the highest active volcano in Costa Rica.

Aguacaliente, Costa Rica
Just south of Cartago is the suburb of Aguacaliente, which is translated as "hot water" in English. Aptly named, the suburb features natural hot springs that have been dammed to form a swimming pool. The area is a popular picnic spot.
Lankester Gardens
Created in the 1940s by English naturalist Charles Lankester, this orchid garden is presently administered by the University of Costa Rica. The gardens feature over 800 species of orchids as well as bromeliads and other plants.

Paved trails lead through open, sunny gardens into shady forests. Different species of orchids are in bloom in the various environments that represent a variety of Costa Rican ecosystems.
