Castelvetrano - San Domenico

The Church of San Domenico, built in 1470, was decorated in 1577 with stucco and frescoes by Antonio Ferraro. Sculpture, stucco reliefs, paintings and architecture combine to create a total unity. Both the original foundation and the subsequent decorations were sponsored by members of the family of Aragona Tagliavia, who during this period were promoted to royal rank. Their tombs are to be found in the domed choir of the church. Since the earthquake of 1968 this "masterpiece of specifically Sicilian artistic forms" (in the words of W. Krönig) has been in a poor state of repair.
