Serra da Gardunha

Castelo Branco is a good base for excursions in the Serra de Gardunha, a range of hills north of the town which in places take on an almost Alpine character, with bizarrely shaped rock formations bearing such names as the Cabeça de Frade ("monk's head") and Pedra Sobreposta ("rockpile").
